I really am wondering..... Dec. 26th, 2009 @ 12:05 pm
[info]regalpewter, posting in [info]therightfangirl

Before the holiday I posted about the closing of Arrow trucking and the stranding of their drivers, as there are many folks working hard to get these folks home, I am somewhat surprised at how there has been absolutely nothing in the mainstream media about this. I am just wondering why a story with so much human interest (how other companies and individuals have stepped forward to get them home) has been basically ignored.

Is it because that it goes against the rosy picture of the economy that The Leader is attempting to put forward, or is because these folks were being helped without a government program? I mean really, if The Leader wished to push through  another stimilus this would be a great story and allow him to take over another industry. I can't believe that they would waste a crisis like this, based on their track record.

Then again maybe the lack of attention is an example of just what exists in Washington today; an elite class that cares nothing for the average person, and would be embarrassed to be caught having to deal with one of them. While remaining blissfully ignorant of the very type of person who actually provides eveything in their lives.

A Fangirl Needs Icon Help Dec. 26th, 2009 @ 05:20 am
[info]fi_harkness, posting in [info]therightfangirl
Okay so the one thing I've never learned is not to make icons from video clips, so I was hoping maybe I could get a helping hand? In the recent Doctor Who Special of 'Never Mind the Buzzcocks', David Tennant does this thing like 4 times where he looks at the screen, shakes his fist and goes, "BARROWMAN!"

If someone could make an icon of that I'd be forever in your debt.

Che's Popularity Dec. 25th, 2009 @ 05:41 pm
[info]arkadelos, posting in [info]therightfangirl
I wonder if the reason Che Guevera is so popular is because he's also the most obscure yet successful communist figure. I never heard of him until I joined this LJ, although I saw his picture from time to time. I mean, he died in 1967, right? So his atrocities are not well-documents, not well-taught, and not recent in the minds of the public. Castro, Mao, and Stalin all lived considerably longer and were thus much more active and recent. Stalin is considerably more well-documented than Mao and Castro.

I think Che's popularity is due to his obscurity. Not many people know about the real Che, and the facts are not as easily accesible compared to the others.

Okay, Japanese peeps across the world. I really don't get y'all. O_o

Of course, there are cries that this is a racist display. I think it's just another way-off-the-mark cultural misfire.

At least they didn't do it to McDonalds. Can you imagine Obama McDonald? The left wanted to start a witchhunt for the anonymous artist who did the Joker, so imagine what they'd want to do to an identified international corporation for dressing our President up as a clown...

Oh dear fuzzy. What if they'd done Wendy's? XD Obama with red pigtails!

The top prosecutors in seven states are probing the constitutionality of a political deal that cut a funding break for Nebraska in order to pass a federal health care reform bill, South Carolina's attorney general said Tuesday. - Attorney General Henry McMaster said he and his counterparts in Alabama, Colorado, Michigan, North Dakota, Texas and Washington state - all Republicans - are jointly taking a look at the deal they've dubbed the "Nebraska compromise." - "The Nebraska compromise, which permanently exempts Nebraska from paying Medicaid costs that Texas and all other 49 states must pay, may violate the United States Constitution - as well as other provisions of federal law," Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said.

What the Obamas Meant By A Non-Religious Christmas Dec. 22nd, 2009 @ 02:04 pm
[info]lazypadawan, posting in [info]therightfangirl
The Obamas weren't going to put up a nativity scene in the East Room, as is tradition, because they wanted to be "more inclusive" (you know, by excluding anything Christian) but went ahead and did it anyway.

Now comes word of some of the fun ornaments on the Obamas' Christmas tree, designed by a controversial figure infamous for his tasteless and anti-conservative store displays. Are we talking about Hummel figurines or stuff from Hallmark?

Nope...we get Obama on Mt. Rushmore, the ever-popular Chairman Mao, and a drag queen:

Like I've been saying. Obama's about as Christian as Bill Maher.

Ever since their post thanking George and Laura Bush, I have become a huge fan of the HillBuzz boys. They've got a sense of humor with a bit of camp that makes reading about what ever BS Obama (or Dr. Utopia, as they sarcastically refer to him) and his administration have done today a little bit easier.

They are also total fanboys, and little culture references are always slip into their posts. And then today there was this post, which really brought me back to the early days of [info]therightfangirl and how the comm started out:
Great Merciful Zeus, we’re using Lord of the Rings analogies, but swear we’ve never been to a Renaissance Fair in our lives.

But, we really do feel like the nation’s at the opening credits of that Return of the King movie.  The period of 2010-2012 is going to be a major tipping point in American history — the likes of which we have not seen in generations.  Honestly, we hate that we are alive in this moment.  We would much rather be our parents’ or grandparents’ ages, or be dead and buried already.  Routinely, we keep thinking about our grandmothers, in particular, and how relieved we are they died years ago and don’t have to witness what the current administration is doing to this country.  They would be heartbroken by what the Liberals are up to.

These boys started off as Hillary fans, but under "Dr. Utopia's" care they are sounding more and more right-wing every day, and that's what gives me hope—that if a group of gay guys in Boystown in Chicago can realize that what's happening now is Bad News for the country and will Vote Right to fix it, then there's a chance for anyone to figure this out. And so, in the spirit of true hope (not Obama's false hope), I leave you with this:
Frodo: I can't do this, Sam.
Sam: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.
Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?
Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.

Top Cuban official: Obama lied during Copenhagen Dec. 21st, 2009 @ 02:53 pm
[info]arkadelos, posting in [info]therightfangirl
By WILL WEISSERT
HAVANA (AP) - Cuba's foreign minister called President Barack Obama an "imperial and arrogant" liar Monday for his conduct at the U.N. climate conference, a reflection of the communist island's increasingly fiery verbal attacks on the U.S. government.

Bruno Rodriguez spent an hour and a half lambasting Obama's behavior in Copenhagen, telling a news conference, "at this summit, there was only imperial, arrogant Obama, who does not listen, who imposes his positions and even threatens developing countries."

He called the summit "a fallacy, a farce" and said Washington used back-room deals and strong-arm tactics to foist on the world a deal that he labeled "undemocratic" and "suicidal" because it urges - but does not require - major polluters to make deeper emissions cuts.

Rodriguez also said Cuba and other poor nations have refused to recognize the agreement because they weren't permitted to participate in its development.

He singled out comments Obama made during a news conference in Copenhagen, when the U.S. president said no agreement had yet been reached but he was confident one would before the summit ended. "Obama knew he was lying, that he was deceiving public opinion," the foreign minister said.

When asked if Cuba was serious about forging a climate agreement given that President Raul Castro declared Copenhagen a failure days before it ended, Rodriguez said, "Cuba's prestige is well-recognized in international negotiations."

"It was an open secret that countries would not reach an agreement," he said.

Rodriguez would not answer questions about the status of an American citizen who was detained in Cuba on Dec. 5 while working as a U.S. government contractor.

Castro first publicly mentioned the detention Sunday, when he told the Cuban Parliament that the American was arrested for distributing illegal satellite communications equipment.

"The United States won't quit trying to destroy the revolution," Castro said, referring to the armed rebellion that brought his brother Fidel to power on New Year's Day 1959.

"In the past few weeks we have witnessed the stepping up of the new administration's efforts in this area," he said, adding that the arrest "demonstrates that the enemy is as active as ever."

American diplomats in Cuba have requested - but not yet received - Cuba's permission for consular access to the detainee, whose name has not been released. Rodriguez refused to say whether his office would grant the request.

Rodriguez's comments Monday echoed remarks by former President Fidel Castro, who in a weekend opinion column called Obama's speech in Copenhagen "deceitful, demagogic and full of ambiguities."

Last week, the elder Castro, who stepped down as head of state in February 2008, wrote that Washington is looking to solidify its control over Latin America and that Obama's "friendly smile and African-American face" hide his government's sinister true intentions for the region.

Raul Castro over the weekend mentioned recent war games Cuba conducted to prepare for a U.S. invasion and hinted that the contractor's arrest shows further American aggression against his country is a real possibility.

"I just want to note that here we have a people who are ready to protect, at any price, the successes of the revolution," he said. "I'd advise one and all that they cease provocations of this type."

Sort-of-new Hugo Weaving interview, Andy Baker and Voiceless pics Dec. 21st, 2009 @ 02:55 am
[info]29crowjane, posting in [info]hugonuts
I say "sort of new" because the moment I saw this, I recognized it as a condensed transcript of a radio interview Hugo did while promoting God of Carnage back in October. Doug Aiton interviewed Hugo and his costar Pamela Rabe on the play and their lives in general at the time. This article focuses on Hugo and general comments about his life. Well worth a read, but if you liked it, you should check out the full interview here. (The interview comes in three parts... Hugo's comments are in the first and third sections.)  Here's the article scan... very large, so under a cut. ;)

Hugo Weaving Doug Aiton Interview )
I wish Aiton had clarified Hugo's remarks about marriage... the article he cites in which Hugo said he was "terrified" of marriage dates back to the mid-1990s. ;) In this radio interview and others, Hugo said he is no longer terrified of it, and that he and Katrina have toyed with the notion of getting married when they're older. The pics are a still from Last Ride up top, and a saucy pic taken by Andy Baker in 2005 when Hugo was promoting Little Fish. Since fans have expressed interest in the Andy Baker pics, here's the full lot. I had to dewatermark them so they aren't high res or perfect, but I still find them hard to resist.

Finally, here's all the pics I've ben able to find that were taken at the Voiceless Grant Awards dinner at the beginning of the month. Unfortunately, media coverage still isn't what the event deserves. Most of these appeared on webpages of grant winners, Sources include the Sydney Morning Herald, West Australian Today,   Community Broadcasting Association of Australia, Southern Cross University University of Tecnology Sydney, Voiceless's site, and the Noerthern Rivers Echo. Thanks to [info]weavingmaiden  for tracking down a couple of these.

Hope all of you are having a wonderful Holiday Season. :) Hugo will return to filming Oranges and Sunshine next month in South Australia, and he's almost certain to reprise Elrond in The Hobbit, which begins filming next summer if all goes well. Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro have both clarified in recent interviews that they do intend to cast Hugo, Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis and perhaps Cate Blanchett in the prequel to Lord of the Rings.

As tonight was the last broadcast by the retiring Charles Gibson on the ABC news, they ran goodbye messages from various famious people. The one thing I noticed was as they captioned the messages from the former presidents, that the only one who was identified as a "Frmr. Pres."  was George W. Bush, all of the rest including his Dad were captioned as "President'. I swear the MSM needs to get over the fact and accept that he is deserving as anyone else who had the job. YIS,

A (small) Conservative Lesson in a Kids' Movie (shock and awe!) Dec. 18th, 2009 @ 02:26 pm
[info]jenny_wildcat, posting in [info]therightfangirl
I don't know if any of you have seen the movie "Kit Kittredge: An American Girl," but it was on HBO Family today and I'd never seen it, so I watched it (I loved the American Girl dolls when I was a kid - I still have my Kirsten doll).  It's about a ten-year-old girl living during the Great Depression and how she copes with all the changes in her life because of the Depression.

Also, earlier this week, Steven Crowder wrote a column on how liberals use Robin Hood as a symbol in their argument for helping the poor in government programs.  Since the story of Robin Hood was referenced in the "Kit" movie and the Great Depression comes up a lot lately, I found this scene from the movie very interesting:

SPOILER WARNING! (the movie's been out more than a year, but I feel obliged to provide one)

EDIT: Fixed paragraph breaks -  LJ keeping taking them out.  Is it doing that to anyone else?
